studio friday {retrospective}

2005 it has been quite a year...
full of creative growth, celebration of life and a few bitter pills.
the bitter pills have been choked on and swallowed and there
has been sooo much to be grateful for{in no particular order}~

my precious mom in law continues to do well, even thrive, after two
devastating brain stem strokes in july.
grandma turned 99 in june, still living on her own and employed at
the nursing home to take care of the "old" people...this woman ROCKS!
there was that hgtv"that's clever" experience....what a hoot.
sarah came to visit, with seppy & the big boys, what fun we had!
i took home a second place ribbon and cash prize for one of the pieces
i had in the american art alliance show at the union ave.church in june...
[thanks to pat & annie for your support to do this!]
i collaborated with good friends...
with my soul sister, nancy,[top left]for the art for a cure fundraiser
in october.
bgf becky and i met every wednesday evening for 2 months to stock
our booth for the saturday monday sale , organized
by the amazing heidi.....looking forward to next years event!
helga submitted the atc ornaments that i made for her & james' july 04
wedding,to somerset for their first "a somerset wedding" book and i was
published on page 107 and in that same book a collaboration put together
by lisa cook on page 164...a very cool wedding gift for the newlyweds helga
and james!
another somerset studio publication "transparent art" was published and
i was asked to submit work for it, my slide mount frame was even featured
in the "jump start projects" article by jenny doh!
the 2006 ARTplay calendar is now available and my "4 U " collage was used for
the month of february!
i look forward to meeting steph in kc and revisiting my amazing art sister, carol in
chicago in the coming new year...maybe even finally getting together with carla, mary
and marie....
i have had a blast participating in studio friday !!!!!!

you are 60% weird...

from my less weird friend,sarah.....

You're so weird, you think you're *totally* normal. Right? But you wig out even the biggest of circus freaks!

all is calm,all is bright.
another Christmas under our belts.
it is monday evening, tom has a hockey game, the
boys are otherwise occupied and h has j over for
the night...they are hunkerd[?] down in the dungeon
watching tv and i just found i had never noticed the reflective
surface of my corner kitchen cabinet...the one i keep my really
old "self help"and reproduction gardening books in....hmm,
i like that you can see the tree in the background,a not all that
subtle reminder of the season we are in....a holiday to me that seems
to have come and gone in a blink of an eye. a new year just around
the corner with new adventures in store...i am ready. you?
{spt}

just yesterday...

the house is quiet at 8:50 am....i recall a time, not sooo long ago
when the kids would be nipping at my heals already, wild with
anticipation,i would fire up the vcr for one more showing of
"how the grinch stole Christmas" so i could sneak off to finish
wrapping their presents...then,much later, when it got dark enough,
we would pile in the car van to look at Christmas lights, come back
home to find that santa had magically been there,oh!the joy!....and so on
and so on and scoobydoobydooby.
i am so grateful for those times, but miss them terribly!

the holidaze dear daughter

my crafty dd
yes it's true,h is a very creative budding photographer,she
is inspired by man ray & others, she has an amazing eye
for color and is a fearless artist,i am very proud of her...very.
when she was 6 years old we went on a family ski trip to lake
tahoe, while i sat on my fearful a,she was skiing black diamond
slopes with her big brothers and dad, taking a big sloppy bite
outta those mountains....a natural athlete,an inspiration. on that
same trip we visited the infamous town of truckee, while in a
glass blowers studio there,h created the beautiful blown glass
ornament you see silhouetting her face in the picture above....
the "lights" in the photo is our Christmas tree in motion, a cool
trick h showed me the other night...the photo of my dd i snapped
unawares, then layered them all together for a mini tribute to her!
i am feeling sappy, what can i say?! love ya!!!!! m

my beautiful family

a bunch of characters...my mom & pop,grandma,sibs,offspring
and hangers on!
a good time was had by all at our annual Christmas gathering,
everyone was on their best behavior and in fine form...i love it
when that happens!
grateful & blessed,
denise

sew what?

my first prolonged effort at the singer....i got my very first
sewing machine in october for my 48th birthday.this morning i
planted myself firmly in front of the thing with a pot of coffee
and a hell bent determination and got to know it,using scraps of
paper and bits of fabric,i made a pile of "sample" stitches, but
only after i figured out and conquered the blankety-blank bobbin...
well just for today anyway, and eventually stitched many of the cards
i will be sending this Christmas....simple pleasure...finding time to use
an unfamiliar "tool"...sew fun!

studio friday {what was i thinking?}

it was july 17th,2005....a steamy hot st.louis summer day,my dear
daughter's 15th birthday, the week my precious mom in law
was hospitalized after suffering 2 strokes and a tv crew
came to call..what was i thinking?
well,truth be told,"thinking"wasn't part of it,that day,i was on
auto pilot....i tried to do what i was directed to do and i am here
to tell you....i am no actor! i can tell you what i was feeling.....
fear, panic & humility with a dash of mania added for survival!
my episode air date is this wed,dec.14th at 11am & 4pm on hgtv's
"that's clever" show. the crew was here for 8+ hours and my
segments are no more that 15 minutes....like i said before,an actor i
am not!
my friends, chris young , kate valleroy & marianne baer
did great jobs on their episodes, but assured me that it was just
good editing...i am skeptical to say the least...what was i thinking?

"many people look my way,many
pass me by...in moments of
reflection i wonder why......"
leon russell "magic mirror" song lyrics 1972

December challenge: reflective surface
The december challenge is a bit easier,

coming up to christmas where everyone is so busy.
But on reflection (ha ha) this challenge might be easy
to take an image, but it does require some thought
and some planning. So first the challenge:To take an
image of yourself in a reflective surface. The reflective
surface can be a bathroom mirror (the most obvious),
but try different things like a window, shiny car bonnet,
still pond, or be adventurous with your mirror images -
use a handmirror in different locations, take advantage
of public mirrors. The other thing to do is to use the
mirror to reflect not just your face but memorablilia that
might add to the story.
